2023 CF40-NRI Finance Roundtable: Exploring the Post-Pandemic Economic Growth and Cooperation of China and Japan
The global economy is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and Ukraine conflict. However, it still faces challenges like geopolitical conflicts, food and energy crises, and U.S. financial instability, all of which add to economic uncertainty. China and Japan's economies are also recovering, providing potential global support, though both countries must address risks and challenges through appropriate fiscal, monetary policies, and structural reforms while embracing industrial policies to foster sustainable growth and explore cooperation opportunities.
To facilitate exchanges between economic communities and practical experts from both countries, the China Finance 40 Forum (CF40) and the Nomura Research Institute (NRI) of Japan collaborated to organize the China-Japan Financial Roundtable in Tokyo on July 1, 2023.
Panel I: The New Role and Outlook of Industrial Policies discussed high-tech industry development and energy structure transformation, the two common challenges faced by China and Japan. Keynote speakers were Xiao Gang (CF40 senior fellow and former chairman of CSRC), Zhang Bin (CF40 senior fellow and deputy director of the Institute of World Economics and Politics of CASS), Mana Nakazora (Chief Credit Strategist/Chief ESG Strategist, Vice Chairperson of Global Markets BNP Paribas, Japan), and Satoru Shibata (Executive Managing Director, REVIC).
Panel II: Policy Response to Post-COVID Growth explored the potential policies for balanced development in China and Japan. Keynote speakers were Yu Yongding (CF40 advisor and academician of CASS), Gao Shanwen (CF40 member and chief economist of Essence Securities), Kazumasa Iwata (president of the Japan Center for Economic Research), and Shin-ichi Fukuda (Professor at the Graduate School of Economics, University of Tokyo).
Tetsuya Inoue (senior researcher at the Financial Market & Digital Business Research Department of NRI) and Wang Haiming (President of CF40) moderated the two panels.
